The George Hogg Family Foundation was created in 1977 by William Kerr Hogg, who established the foundation in honour of his father, George Hogg. The funds endowing the GHFF came from the personal wealth of William Kerr Hogg, who made his fortune through the family businesses – The Guaranteed Pure Milk Company and the Purity Ice Cream Company, as well as his own investments.
From its inception the Foundation has been dedicated to assisting people in need. Over the years the directors have tended to favour projects and organizations located in Montreal. The GHFF’s unofficial policy of supporting Montreal charities seems to have grown from a chance remark supposedly made by George Hogg many years ago.
The family story has it that George once said that he had “made his money in the city of Montreal, and that it should go back to the people of Montreal.” For over forty years now, this notion has served as a guideline for the GHFF directors, resulting in over $28 million worth of grants to numerous Montreal charitable organizations.
The George Hogg Family Foundation operates on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá;ka (Mohawk), a place which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange among various nations.
